Am 8. Dezember 1980 wurde John Lennon gegen 22:50 Uhr von dem geistig verwirrten Attentäter Mark David Chapman in New York vor dem Dakota Building erschossen. Als John Lennon wenige Stunden vor dem Mord das Dakota Building verließ, ließ sich Chapman eine Schallplatte von ihm signieren und wurde in diesem Moment von einem anderen Fan gemeinsam mit Lennon fotografiert. Chapman ist dadurch auf dem letzten Foto, das den Künstler lebend zeigt, mit diesem abgebildet.
