Sorry, I didnt know if I could post this in english. I used google translate :18:

Here it goes again:

I am currently looking at a Merkel KR1 Jagd .308 LINKS with a fluted barrel and grade 4 wood. At around 3300 euro, is this a decent buy? I have a R93 6.5x55, but I want a little bigger caliber for wild boar hunting and I like the merkel, so why not :24:

Anyone with experience with the KR1 Jagd?

If you already have a 6,5x55 and you now want a "bigger" caliber for wild boars, the .308 is really small step. If the weapon shoult be especially used for wild boar hunting, than you should think about a bigger step in the direction of a 9,3x62. Than you have a german weapon and a german caliber. :28: :31:

Yes I know, but i can always buy a bigger barrel later. I wanted this because of the feel and look! Noone seems to want the KR1, so very few in links are for sale in norway. Why is this? R93 sells 130.000 R93`s, KR1 has barely sold 10.000...
Why doesnt anyone seem to like the KR1?

Hi RxHelix,
nice to have contact to a Norwegian hunter!
I think in a discussion about calibres you never find a solution. I’ve shot a couple of boars with .308 and it worked fine till jet.
Back to your point. I’ve personally no experiences with this model, but the price is f….ing high :16: :19: !
With a little patience have a look to these sites:

Best regards and a happy x-mas

Hi!
I have been hunting with the Merkel KR1 for the last 4 years. I owned the simpler Standard modell, which of course is mechanically the same. Calibre .30-06
It is a fantastic rifle, I loved it. Very accurate, easy to handle, safe and stylish (in my eyes). The trigger is excellent, even when not set.

The .308 Win. is more than sufficient for wild boar, whatever they say here. Just make sure you get a bullet of 180 gr.. The recommended 9,3x62 kicks like a horse and I have seen many hunters wincing on the range.

In Germany the sticker price is 4.119,- € for a new "Jagd" model. But there will be import taxes as Norway is not a member of the EU.

So, after all the price seems ok and if you can afford it, grab it. You will never regret it.

A fantastic answer and in perfect english, thank you! It is a relief to hear you like it, I was afraid I was alone about liking this model :12:

The weapon is NEW from a weapon shop, heavily discounted because it is the last one they have left. The normal Neupreis in Norway is 6000 Euro with linkssystem because of import taxes, so it is a nice discount! Are you happy with the accurancy, and do you have any recommendations in regards to optics? I will use the weapon for Wild boar as well as moose and deer!

Dear RxHelix,
First of all: For that price: Stop posting! Hurry! Run! Grab it!

Accuracy was fantastic (at least with my rifle).

Gun and calibre are absolutely perfect for deer and wild boar (Don't shoot any bullet lighter than 180 gr.)
Of course, I cannot say anything about moose. We simply do not see many of them down here :19:, no no.

My personal feeling is the .308 Win. might be a little small for such a big animal. But a Swedish hunting friend says they shoot moose with the 6.5x55 as they are not very shot proof.

Optics is a hotly debated topic in Germany, where everyone knows everything better than anyone else. My recommendation depends on what you are ready to spend:
(German prices)
<1000 €: Zeiss Duralyt 3-12x50
1000-1700 €: Schmidt und Bender Zenith 2,5-10 x 56
1700 - 2500 €: Swarovski Z6i 2,5-15x56

And I would insist on the IR (= Illuminated Reticle) version.

Best regards

Thank you so much! In regards to moose, I agree for the biggest bulls.
The thing with moose is that you find them ranging from 100 kiloes to 350 kiloes.
So the same calibre can be unsuitable for one and suitable for one!
Are there really no moose in germany? Magnificent animal and very wise and hard to hunt, you must come here and try it!

I prefer a smaller scope, perhaps 1-6 :31:

Do not say that again or you'll have me on your doorsteps before Santa can even knock on it!
Moose hunting is a dream here in Germany.
Actually we had a single teenage male her on the island in October, migrating in via Poland. But it has miraculously "vanished" (in someone's deep freezer.)

Ok, Mr. Daylighthunter, if you don't want my big scopes, here is your updated recommendation:

<900€: Zeiss Duralyt 2-8x42
1000-1500: Schmidt und Bender Zenith 1,5-6 x 42
1700 - 2200 €: Swarovski Z6i 1,7-10x42.

We do a lot of night hunting here and therefore all use these 56 mm stove pipes.

That's a custom made "Ritter" bolt action rifle.
Mr. Ritter is a small gunsmith / manufacturer in Garlstedt, 30 km south of Hamburg. Just a stone-cast from the A7.
